For the month of May at West Woods Christian Academy we are reading and memorizing Psalm 103:8-14. Students in grades K-12 are learning the attributes of God and His wonderful mercy from this beautiful Psalm.

v8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. Mercy is often described as not getting what we deserve. (penalty for our sin) Grace is defined as getting what we don’t deserve (forgiveness from a righteous God, and reserved seats in heaven)

v10 He (God) has not dealt with us according to our sin, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. Now that’s mercy. Make no mistake though, God has not just overlooked sin and said, “No problem, your sin isn’t that big a deal.” Quite the contrary. Our sin is a BIG DEAL. So big that God, to remain righteous, had to take it out on Himself, or more specifically, His Son.

One of my favorite verses in the whole Bible is II Corinthians 5:21 that explains in summary this GREAT EXCHANGE. Mercy and Grace personified in Jesus Christ.

For He (GOD) made Him (Jesus), who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. IICor. 5:21

Just imagine the humiliation, embarrassment, sheer defilement, that Jesus experienced when He, who knew no sin, actually became sin for us. See, God didn’t overlook punishment for sin, our sin, He poured it out all over His Son in those dark hours on the cross.

That’s the beauty of trusting in Jesus for our righteousness. We get His righteousness by trusting in the finished work of Christ on that cross. We didn’t earn, don’t deserve it, yet when we trust Him, we get it. Mercy and Grace personified.

What motivates you to live for Him and carry out practical righteous living? The deepest motivation is a profound love and appreciation for The Great Exchange that took place at the cross. Love Him back with your life. Not to impress people, or win favor with humanity, do it say THANKS for HIS mercy and grace.

At West Woods Christian Academy in Hamden, CT students are exposed daily to solid Biblical doctrine and practical application of principles from the Word of God. The life changing power of God’s Word explained and applied is evident every day.
